Duchity

Feb 19

The road to Duchity was long, as usual.  We passed through areas of greater destruction than Port au Prince.  We passed lines of women a mile or more long waiting to receive a bag of rice from USAID.  When we passed through Laogane is looked like a bomb had flattened the entire city.  House after house was destroyed, flattened.  Camp after camp of people – some in tents, some in makeshift shelters made with sheets.  And the night before it had poured for hours.  I keep on wondering how people will rebuild their lives.

The road from Les Cayes to Duchity is improving… a lot of work has been done, then all of a sudden you reach a place where the repair hasn’t arrived yet, and it is worse than ever!!  But there is hope.
Everyone tells me here there are twice as many people in each household with all the internal refugees who have returned.  There are 100 extra students in the secondary school who left PAP.  Everyone makes an effort to support each other.

Tomorrow we will plant a garden in Les Caves, and I will visit the coffee planters.

I apologize for the lack of good communication, not very good internet access.
